The ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ has created a new research and teaching laboratory that will examine the physical properties of radioactive materials, while training future workforces for the nuclear, engineering and environmental sectors.
The
Radioisotope and Advanced Materials Suite (RAMS) is a radiation-licensed facility that supports the detailed physical, structural, and elemental characterisation of complex materials.
Approved by the Environment Agency, it includes a range of analytical equipment and a rare end-to-end capability from sample preparation through to high-resolution structural, elemental, and radiological measurement.
This is key to research ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ“ led by academics right across the
Faculty of Science and Engineering ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ“ that is exploring nuclear reactor safety, radiation protection, waste management, and the development of advanced materials for future nuclear systems.
Researchers are also actively engaged in projects examining graphite technologies, carbon capture, environmental contamination and novel solutions that enhance the safety, resilience and long-term sustainability of nuclear infrastructure.
RAMS complements existing analytical facilities available for research and consultancy at the University, including the
ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Electron Microscopy Centre (PEMC) and composites and materials analysis labs in the Babbage Building.
Together, they form a suite of facilities through which academics work closely with key industry and regional partners to strengthen the UKÂÌñ»»ÆÞ™s nuclear capability and skills base.
