Maritime law is a truly global, multifaceted area of legal study, characterised by an ever-increasing regulatory landscape.  The LLM Maritime Law is designed to provide the opportunity to develop an in-depth, specialised knowledge of the legal rules, regulations, and practices governing shipping, international trade, maritime security and risk, and ocean-related activities.  The knowledge and skills developed in the programme will produce highly employable graduates for the maritime sector.  
 

Industry relevant curriculum

Interdisciplinary in character, the programme offers scope to acquire and develop the skillsets valued and sought out in maritime related industries including those focused on shipping, environmental management and maritime security. Aligned anthropological and commercial perspectives related to coastal communities and the wider maritime environment offer the opportunity to gain an appreciation of the commercial dimensions of maritime law as well as the social and environmental challenges set in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Year 1

Our teaching will be by academic staff and offer a blended and flexible approach, including on-campus delivery, with on-line support through our Digital Learning Environment. You will have opportunities to get involved in extra-curricular activities, such as research seminars, external speakers, publish in our ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Law Review, as well as joining our excellent Student Law Society to participate in activities such as mooting and networking events. Join our LLM and gain both a relevant and advanced understanding of the law and the skills to strengthen your competency as a practitioner or researcher.
The programme offers the scope for considering perspectives from Maritime Security and Risk management, as well as broader anthropological and environmental law perspectives related to coastal communities and the wider maritime environment. It offers an opportunity to gain an appreciation of the commercial dimensions of maritime law as well as the social and environmental challenges set in the context of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Delivered over 1 year full-time or two years part-time, it is comprised in a core module

Students then complete a capstone dissertation in a negotiated subject of their choice,
within the parameters of the award title.

Studying Law: Advanced Skills and Theories

This module develops advanced understanding of lawÂÌñ»»ÆÞ™s theoretical underpinnings. It deploys key ideas and theories to analyse and raise foundational questions about the development and performance of modern legal systems, institutions, and doctrines. It gives learners the opportunity to enhance their critical evaluation and argumentation skills by engaging with advanced theoretical scholarship and complex ideas and supports transition to postgraduate study by providing skills training.

Law Dissertation and Advanced Research Skills

The dissertation module provides the opportunity to undertake a substantial self-directed, research project on a legal topic of choice. First, students are introduced to concepts and methodologies commonly used in legal research, enabling understanding of how a range of different methods are applied in the context of law and their relationship to legal theory. Students will utilise these skills to design their own research project and contextualise the work carried by others.

Coastal Cultures: Marine Anthropology in the Age of Climate Change and Mass Extinction

Using a range of anthropological theoretical frameworks, this module analyses how coastal communities use the sea - not only as a source of livelihood, but as a key ingredient in the construction of their identity and place in world. Drawing on a range of ethnographic case study from around the world, we study how coastal communities are responding to climate change, climate change scepticism, sea level rise, pollution, and extinction. Through such debates, we examine how anthropology in general and marine ethnography specifically can contribute to the protection and management of endangered human and non-human life-worlds.

This module considers the regulatory framework applied to activities and development in the marine environment. Contextualised by the International law and its implementing measures, the module examines contemporary issues relating to the sustainable use of the marine environment, by way of a theoretical and practical analysis of the law, to provide insight into this dynamic and contemporary area of regulation.

This module explores the operational and contextual aspects of maritime security.

MAR7009
Maritime Governance, Insurance and Law

This module provides students with a comprehensive, integrated understanding of Maritime Governance, Insurance and Law, within the context of applicable English law. Students will acquire the knowledge and practical skills necessary to analyse complex legal, business, and insurance challenges, evaluate risks, and develop innovative solutions to make informed management decisions.

Jason Lowther and Visiting Professor, Michael Williams, were the lead authors of a ground-breaking policy that protects underwater heritage in Antarctica, ensuring merchant vessels like Endurance can never be salvaged by third parties.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree in Law with a minimum of a 2:2 classification from a UK university. An Honours degree with some inclusion of Law and/or Policy in a related discipline, such as criminology, international relations or other social science, will be considered on a case-by-case basis. 

Extended entry requirements

  • All applicants must have GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above.
  • Applicants who do not have appropriate Higher Education qualifications may be admitted to the programme on the basis of relevant prior experience if they can demonstrate the potential to successfully complete the programme. The Admissions Tutor / Programme Leader, in accordance with the UniversityÂÌñ»»ÆÞ™s Academic Regulations may require such applicants to provide further evidence to support their application and undertake an interview.
