Key features

This module is designed to enable nursing staff to develop existing professional skills in Emergency Care. They will critically evaluate and develop specialist knowledge in order to effectively assess, prioritise, plan and deliver effective evidence-based care to the patient presenting to the Emergency Department.

The module can be studied at level 6 (degree) or level 7 (masters).

HEAD397 module details (degree level)

The aim of this module is to support students to develop their knowledge and understanding of nursing in Emergency Care; it will enable participants to:

Develop sound knowledge of the theory and evidence base which underpins the assessment and management of the patient in Emergency Care Develop effective clinical decision-making skills to promote high quality, safe, patient-focused care in the Emergency Department.
Apply and critically analyse current research / evidence to practice incorporating relevant professional, legal and ethical dimensions.
Facilitate the achievement of Emergency Nursing competencies aligned with the RCN Emergency Nursing Framework.

Learning outcomes

Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the assessment and management of the patient presenting to the Emergency Department with undiagnosed illness or injury.
Demonstrate confidence and flexibility in interpreting and synthesizing complex patient data, to differentiate minor illness and injury from serious illness and injury.
Exercise judgement to enable effective communication and promote patient centred care of individuals presenting to the Emergency Department.
Critically explore the evidence base related to meeting patient health needs in the Emergency Department, incorporating collaborative interprofessional team working, professional issues and legal and ethical principles.

APP762 module details (masters level)

The aim of this module is to support students to develop their knowledge and understanding of nursing in Emergency Care; it will enable participants to:

Gain a deeper understanding and application of the evidence base and contemporary issues influencing Emergency Nursing, through advancing and utilising knowledge and skills in practice.
Utilise effective clinical decision-making strategies to promote high quality, safe, patient-focused care in the Emergency Department. Develop a critical, analytical and creative approach to practice incorporating relevant professional, legal and ethical dimensions.
Facilitate the achievement of Emergency Nursing Level competencies aligned with the RCN Emergency Nursing Framework.

“This exciting new module forms part of a number of programme pathways at level 6 and 7 and is aligned with the RCN National Curriculum and Competency Framework for Emergency Nursing. The course has been specifically designed to be delivered through distance learning, with a heavy focus on the student setting their own learning objectives within the Emergency Department. The taught element will comprise a wide range of teaching and learning activities such as discussion, seminars and group work delivered by experts in the field of emergency nursing and medicine.”

Entry requirements

BSc (Hons) at 2:2 or above, or European first cycle equivalent. Clinicians without a degree but with appropriate experience may be eligible to apply. Overseas students require IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent required.

You must be on the NMC register and currently be working in an Emergency Department and have a designated mentor in the department prior to commencing the course.
