Law Society president praises University for widening access to justice
Students and staff in the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞÂÌñ»»ÆÞ™s law team welcomed a very special visitor, recently.
President of the Law Society of England and Wales, Richard Atkinson came to the UniversityÂÌñ»»ÆÞ™s Law Clinic as part of his bicentennial tour.
Based at the city centre campus, the multi-award-winning Law Clinic is, in essence, the University's own law firm, where students can practise as solicitors in-training.
Coordinated by law students and supervised by staff, the clinic provides hands-on experience and delivers vital services to the local community, providing people with advice and assistance across a range of legal areas.

I have seen first-hand the significant legal challenges many people face and how disruptive they can be. These are then all too frequently compounded by their inability to access legal advice due to the growing legal aid deserts we face.

This makes the work of organisations like ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Law Clinic that are at the frontline of tackling these issues, by providing quality legal advice to those who need it, a vital resource.
Thank you to the staff and volunteers involved in the Clinic for the hard work they do to widen access to justice day in, day out.

Richard met around 20 students, plus guests from ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Law Society, including current president, Jenny Phillips, and the immediate past president Carrie Laws.
"The presidentÂÌñ»»ÆÞ™s talk was very insightful and reaffirmed my desire to graduate and practise law. RichardÂÌñ»»ÆÞ™s stories were so inspiring, particularly his words around the future of legal aid and plans to overcome the challenges of access to justice. I feel privileged to be able to work in the Law Clinic and get experience applying my academic studies to make a genuine difference in the lives of real people."
In addition to the Law Clinic, the University has a busy Law Society through the StudentsÂÌñ»»ÆÞ™ Union, which offers networking opportunities and organises skill-based competitions.
And ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ recently invested in its very own courtroom; the Foulston Room is where students develop their skills through mock trials and 'mooting' competitions.
