Gloucestershire nurse receives ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Award of Merit

12 May 2025

Matthew Stewart from Gloucestershire has been given a prestigious Award of Merit at the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ’s annual Congress in Liverpool.

Matthew Stewart with his Award of Merit medal and certificate 800x400 Celebrating the very best in nursing, the annual ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Awards present Fellowships, Honorary Fellowships and Awards of Merit to those who have made outstanding contributions to nursing and to the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ, along with honours for the Learning Representative, Safety Representative and Steward of the Year.

Matthew, who works at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, said:

"It’s a real honour to be given such a high award within the College and something that I never thought I would get. I was just doing my job, raising concerns as an ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ steward on an issue that has affected so many of my nursing colleagues. I want to thank all those that have supported me on this journey."

Susan Masters, ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Regional Director said:

“I am delighted for Matthew. The work he has undertaken to lobby on the issue of corridor care has been amazing. Matthew has stepped up to represent not only his immediate colleagues and community but nursing on a national scale. His work has, and is, making a real difference and we are very proud of him. This award is absolutely deserved, and we are delighted he has been recognised in this way.”

Matthew was given the award on International Nurses' Day, the first day of the annual ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Congress in Liverpool.

ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ Congress is where ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ members meet to learn, develop and share nursing practice. It is also where members inform the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ agenda and influence nursing and health policy through debate. Congress 25 is taking place in Liverpool from 11 to 15 May 2025.
