Bringing dementia lived experience and research together

Dr Krithika Anil and Dr Daniela Oehring recently hosted a series of free public lectures, titled Dementia voices: stories and science in conversation, on rare dementias in partnership with . Each event brought together two compelling perspectives: individuals affected by dementia, whether through a diagnosis, caring role, or close personal connection, and researchers, who reflected on the realities of conducting dementia research.
At the heart of these events was the dialogue. The speakers and audience came together in an engaging and open conversation that explored where lived experience and research understanding meet. These events were overwhelmingly positive, as reflected in the audience feedback:

I loved the lived experiences shared! It made the event more relatable and the information (though tough) easier to process.

Absolutely informative and up to date. Interesting learning about the research developments.

Very thorough, a brilliant mixture of experiences and research; as a student nurse, I have learned a lot.

These events are closely aligned with the work of the Brain Research & Imaging Centre (BRIC) at the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ. Initiatives like these public lectures help to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and everyday experience.
We are hugely grateful to everyone who joined us for these events. We thank our wonderful researcher speakers: Dr Nicolas Farina, Ian Sherriff BEM, Dr Donnchadh Murphy, Dr Tomasina Oh, Lorna Smith, and Dr Matt Roser. We also thank our lived experience speakers, who wish to remain anonymous.
Held at The Box in ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ, the events offered a relaxed and supportive environment. The events were also funded by the University's Explore Awards.

To do research that is rigorous, ethical, and informed by public and patient experience, it is vital that the Brain Research & Imaging Centre (BRIC) and DDRC Healthcare maintain active links with the communities we work with.
To do this, we run events such as group visits and tours, talks by researchers, and work experience for students.
BRIC has hosted many work-experience students from local schools over the years. Here, Nicholas from Devonport High School for Boys is shown visiting our MRI control room.

In December 2023, members of the ÂÌñ»»ÆÞ University of the Third Age (U3A) toured the BRIC and DDRC Healthcare, viewing our laboratories and specialist equipment, and meeting some of the researchers. The group also visited the hyperbaric chambers and MRI scanner used for clinical purposes and research.
