Mentor: Martin Keen, Master Inventor and IBM Technical Trainer at IBM
Benjaminñޙs path to university was shaped by resilience and determination. Growing up in a family where finances were always tight, he knew early on that pursuing higher education in engineering would be a challenge. ñޜIñޙve always loved problem-solving and understanding how things work,ñޝ he explains. ñޜBut without support, I donñޙt think Iñޙd be here today.ñޝ The Tamar Engineering Project scholarship has lifted much of the pressure:
ñޜItñޙs given me the chance to focus properly on my studies, rather than constantly worrying about money.ñޝ
The funding has helped cover essential costs like travel and course materials, while also allowing him to step back from part-time work that once ate into his study time.
Academically, Benjamin has flourished. ñޜThe difference in my concentration and energy has been huge,ñޝ he says. ñޜIñޙve been able to dedicate more time to my projects and really engage with lectures.ñޝ His confidence has grown, too, particularly through the mentoring programme. ñޜHaving a mentor whoñޙs already established in the industry has been amazing. Theyñޙve given me advice on everything from job applications to how to build professional networks. Itñޙs made me think more strategically about my career.ñޝ
Benjamin is also building a stronger connection to the ñ. ñޜThe scholarship has encouraged me to get more involved in events and societies, and to actually see the University as a place where I belong,ñޝ he says. ñޜThat sense of community really motivates me.ñޝ

Looking forward, Benjamin has clear ambitions. ñޜI want to work in sustainable engineering and help develop technologies that make a real difference to the environment,ñޝ he explains. ñޜLong term, Iñޙd love to contribute to projects that tackle climate change and create a more sustainable future.ñޝ
To the donors who made his scholarship possible, Benjamin has a heartfelt message: ñޜThank you for believing in me. Your generosity means more than you know, itñޙs not just financial help, itñޙs an investment in my future. Youñޙre giving students like me the chance to dream bigger.ñޝ
And to those considering supporting a scholarship, he adds: ñޜDonñޙt underestimate the impact you can have. Even a single award can completely change the trajectory of someoneñޙs life.ñޝ
